Method: why all 6 pens are Dr. Pen models This page ranks six Dr. Pen models only. That is a deliberate scope choice. Many readers search for Dr. Pen by name, and comparing models from one brand family keeps the needle system and cartridge style alike. Four pens are sold by Dr. Pen US (us.drpen.co). Two are sold by Derma Queen (dermaqueen.shop), a third-party store. We did not confirm whether Derma Queen is an authorized Dr. Pen seller. For pens from other brands, see our Dr. Pen alternatives. All 6 product pages opened on 24 Oct 2026 and showed the pen in stock.

How we scored
| Criterion | Weight | 5 | 3 | 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Device price | 25% | Lowest, or within 10% of it | Within 10% of the group median | Highest, or 50%+ above the median |
| Kit completeness | 15% | Pen, microneedle cartridges and a bonus pack or stamp | Pen and microneedle cartridges | Pen with nano cartridges only |
| Buyer ratings | 20% | 4.5+ from 1,000+ ratings | 4.0 to 4.4, or under 1,000 ratings | Under 4.0, under 100 ratings, or none found |
| Subscription and returns | 15% | One-time purchase, no forced subscription, 30+ day returns | Two of those three | One or none |
| Regulatory clarity | 10% | FDA status stated and matching the database | Not stated, or not found in the database | Claim that contradicts the database |
A 4 means more than 10% below the median. A 2 means more than 10% above the median but less than 50% above. The median device price is $283.91. Two changes from our usual rubric: pens have no fixed number of sessions, so we score the device price, not the price per session. Ingredient transparency is left out because no pen here ships with a serum, so the other weights are scaled up (each sum is divided by 0.85). Totals are rounded half up to one decimal. Ties go to higher buyer ratings, then lower price, then name.
Scores come from public information checked on 24 Oct 2026. We did not test these products.

How to choose
Count the cartridges, not just the pen
Four of the six boxes hold nano cartridges only, and Dr. Pen says microneedling cartridges are sold separately1,2,3,4. Three of those pens come with a free cartridge pack on 24 Oct 2026, but it is a gift bundle with terms1,2,4. Cartridge prices were not captured for this page; see the brand page.
Check who sells it
Dr. Pen US and Derma Queen have different return rules. Dr. Pen US gives a "14-day Change of Mind return from the date of purchase, subject to a 20% restocking fee", unopened only5. Derma Queen allows "returns for change of mind within 30 days of delivery for a refund"8. Its policy also says it is "unable to accept returns of items that have been opened, used, or show signs of wear", then adds that "a 20% restocking fee will apply" if a return is approved8. It is not clear when that fee applies, so ask before you order. Amazon listings for the M9, H3 and M8S name no seller we could confirm as Dr. Pen9,10,11.
Match the depth range to the plan
Ranges run from 1.0 mm on the H3 to 2.5 mm on four models1,3,4,6,7. A longer range is not a reason to go deeper. The FDA notes that needles can reach nerves and blood vessels14. Dr. Pen's own pages say to contact your GP or dermatologist with any concern1,2.
Decide if you want a pen at all
A pen is not the only option. A roller or a stamp has fixed needles and no motor; see our derma roller vs derma stamp guide. Micro infusion stamps use much shorter needles with a serum; see micro infusion vs microneedling.
Products we left out
- SkinPen: sold to professionals, not to home users. See our Dr. Pen vs SkinPen page.
- Dr. Pen M8: left out because the newer M8 Max and the M8S cover the same line.
- Other brands: outside the scope of this page. Our Dr. Pen alternatives page covers them.
FDA status
The FDA has authorized microneedling devices to improve "facial acne scars, facial wrinkles, and abdominal scars in patients aged 22 years or older"13. It also says it "has not authorized any microneedling medical devices for over-the-counter sale"14. We searched openFDA on 24 Oct 2026 and found no FDA record for any of these 6 models12. A record exists for a "Dr. pen Microneedling System", K230420, from Guangzhou Ekai Electronic Technology, dated 11 Aug 202312. We could not confirm its link to Dr. Pen US or to these models. The M8 Max page says it "may not have been evaluated by the TGA or FDA"3. The A11 and Q2 pages say "In accordance with FDA authorisation, microneedling pens are intended for use by individuals aged 22 years and older"1,2. We found no record that matches that wording for these models, so each scores 3 on regulatory clarity.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a microneedling machine?
The six Dr. Pen models on this page cost $108.88 to $319.00 on 24 Oct 2026. The Hydra Pen H3 is $108.88 and the M8S is $119.88 at Derma Queen. The M8 Max is $248.82 at Dr. Pen US. The A11 Ultima PRO, Bio Pen Q2 and M9 are $319.00 each. Microneedling cartridges are sold separately for most models, so add those to the cost.
What is the most effective microneedle size for hair growth?
There is no settled answer. A 2022 systematic review of 22 studies found microneedling helped hair as an add-on to treatments such as minoxidil. The studies used needles from 0.50 to 2.50 mm, and the authors called the data of relatively low quality. Needle length for the scalp is a choice to make with a dermatologist, not from a product page.
Can an esthetician buy a SkinPen?
SkinPen is sold to professionals, not to the public. Its FDA records are a De Novo grant from 2018 and three 510(k)s for Crown Aesthetics. The K241400 summary lists prescription use. Whether a licensed esthetician can open an account depends on Crown Aesthetics and on state rules, so ask Crown directly. Our Dr. Pen vs SkinPen page has the full record.
Is microneedling at-home a good idea?
The FDA says it has not authorized any microneedling medical devices for over-the-counter sale. It lists common risks such as redness, dryness, peeling, itching and burning. Because the needles can reach nerves and blood vessels, it advises a provider with special training in microneedling. Talk to a dermatologist before you buy a pen for home use.
Which Dr. Pen is best for home use?
By our score, the Hydra Pen H3 ranks first with 3.5 out of 5. It is the cheapest pen here at $108.88, comes with two 12-pin cartridges and has 30-day change-of-mind returns at Derma Queen. It also has the shortest depth range, up to 1.0 mm. The score ranks public facts only. It does not show which pen works best on skin.
