Does Micro Infusion Work for Hair Growth? What Studies Show
What studies show about microneedling and scalp micro infusion for hair loss, how kit depths compare with clinic depths, and what three at-home kits cost.
By DermaRatings Editorial TeamUpdated Facts checked 7 min read
Not proven for home kits. Scalp micro infusion itself has only "a few case reports" behind it1. Microneedling has better data, but mostly in clinics, at deeper settings, and as an add-on to minoxidil2,3. No study we found tests an at-home micro infusion hair kit by name (PubMed, searched 24 Oct 2026).
Key points
- A 2025 review of 12 trials found microneedling plus minoxidil raised hair count more than minoxidil alone, but results varied a lot between trials3.
- Studies used needle depths of 0.50 to 2.50 mm2. Glov prints 0.25 mm for its hair kit5.
- Sessions in studies ran from "once weekly to monthly"2. Kits say weekly or every two weeks5,9,11.
- Kit claims such as "Shuts off DHT" or a "natural alternative to minoxidil" are brand claims5,11.
- None of the three kits had an FDA 510(k) record we could find on 24 Oct 202614.
What micro infusion for hair is
Micro infusion means putting a product into the skin with very fine needles in one step. A 2023 paper by Cortez de Almeida, Melo and Tosti describes a clinic version for the scalp1. It says the technique "provides a small amount of drugs delivered homogeneously into the skin combined with micro-needling"1.
Home kits work in a similar way, but with a cosmetic serum, not a drug. You fill a stamp or applicator with serum and press it over thinning areas. Our guide to what micro infusion is covers the face version. For plain needling tools, see derma rollers for the face and microneedling pens.
What the studies show
Scalp microinfusion. The 2023 paper is a short review, not a trial. It says the literature "is limited to a few case reports despite its wide use in some countries"1. Its conclusion: "Further studies are needed to standardize protocols"1. One author lists consulting work for several companies, including Monat Global1.
Microneedling for hair loss. A 2022 systematic review found 22 clinical studies with 1,127 people2. As an add-on, microneedling "improved hair parameters" across many hair loss types2. In pattern hair loss, the gains came when it was paired with 5% minoxidil, growth factor solutions or PRP2. But the authors said the data "are of relatively low quality"2. The lead author lists a Perfect Hair Health email address2.
Microneedling plus minoxidil. A 2025 meta-analysis looked at 12 randomized trials with 631 people with pattern hair loss3. Adding microneedling to minoxidil "significantly improved hair count compared to minoxidil monotherapy"3. Hair diameter also improved3. But the trials differed a lot from each other (I² = 88%)3. Side effects were more common with microneedling, 74 events vs 59, though most were mild3.
What none of them show. No study we found tests a home micro infusion kit or the serums sold with one. The studies used minoxidil, PRP or growth factors, not the peptide and botanical serums in these kits. So the study results do not transfer to any brand.
Needle depth: studies vs kits
The 2022 review covered needling depths of "0.50-2.50 mm"2. The 2025 review found depth did not change hair count results, comparing 1 mm or less with more than 1 mm3. Neither looked at depths below 0.50 mm.
Of the three kits below, Glov prints its depth: "0.25mm gold needles"5. That is half the shallowest depth in the 2022 review. We could not compare the other two kits on depth here.
How often
Studies used sessions "from once weekly to monthly"2. Kits fall inside that range:
- Glov: the current page says "once every two weeks"5. An older Glov page that still loads says "once a week"6.
- Microfollic: "One 5-minute session a week"9.
- SOREN: "Use once per week for optimal results"11.
More sessions are not better. Follow the kit's own directions.
Downsides and risks
The FDA lists common microneedling risks such as redness, dryness, itching, peeling, bruising and bleeding4. Less common risks include infection, skin color changes and cold sores coming back4. It says not to use a microneedling device if you have an active infection, rash or cold sore, or have used isotretinoin in the last 6 months4. It also warns that "re-use of the needle cartridge is unsafe"4.
That last point matters for one kit. SOREN's FAQ says "each needle head is intended for a single user for up to four weekly treatments before it must be discarded"11. Glov and Microfollic say their heads are single use8,9.
SOREN's page also says "No side effects"11. The 2025 review reported side effects with microneedling, even if mostly mild3. Treat "No side effects" as a brand claim.
When to see a dermatologist
See a dermatologist before you buy a kit if your hair loss is sudden, patchy, or comes with itching, pain, redness or scaling. These can be signs of a condition that needs a diagnosis, not a serum. See one too if you already use minoxidil or another treatment, so you can ask whether needling fits in. Stop and get checked if you get pus, swelling that grows after 2 days, or fever4.
Example kits and what they cost
Brands below are examples, in alphabetical order. Prices are one-time prices on each brand's site, checked 24 Oct 2026. This is not a ranking. For a closer look at single kits, see our Glov hair regrowth review and Microfollic review.
| Kit | Price | Sessions | Price per session | Cadence | Guarantee | FDA record |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glov Hair Regrowth System | $69, $149 or $229 | 2, 6 or 12 | $34.50, $24.83 or $19.08 | Every two weeks | 120 days | None found |
| Microfollic Hair Infusion System | $99 or $159 | 4 or 12 | $24.75 or $13.25 | Weekly | 30-day returns; 90-day results guarantee | None found |
| SOREN Hair Regrowth System | $69.95, $103.95 or $123.95 | 4, 8 or 12 | $17.49, $12.99 or $10.33 | Weekly | 90 days | None found |
Notes. Glov $69 / 2, $149 / 6, $229 / 12 treatments5; 120 days in its refund policy7. Microfollic $99 / 4, $159 / 129. SOREN $69.95 / 4, $103.95 / 8, $123.95 / 12 vials11; 90 days from delivery12. FDA searches14.
Glov. The serum lists acetyl tetrapeptide-3, copper tripeptide-1, caffeine and biotin5. The page calls rosemary a "natural alternative to minoxidil", which is a brand claim5. The downside: Glov's pages do not agree. An older page that still loads sells a $149 kit with "(4) Hair Regrowth Micro-Infusion Device (12) Glov Hair Regrowth Serums", says "once a week" and offers a "30-Day Money-Back Guarantee"6. On Amazon, the kit is $149 for four sessions and rated 3.9 out of 5 from 170 reviews (checked 24 Oct 2026)8.
Microfollic. The page names Procapil and Capixyl, two branded peptide complexes, as key ingredients9. A one-month kit has "4 sterile heads and 4 serum vials, providing 4 applications"9. With a subscription, the price drops to $79 for 4 or $126 for 12, which is $19.75 or $10.50 a session9. The downsides: returns need the product "sealed, unused, and in its original packaging" within 30 days10. The 90-day guarantee refunds "your purchase (shipping excluded)"9. The 1,276 reviews shown are on Microfollic's own site9, and we found no independent rating to compare.
SOREN. The page is aimed at men and says "Shuts off DHT", a brand claim we could not verify11. It also says "These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA"11. The downsides: heads are reused for up to four treatments, as noted above11. The price on the page, $69.95 for one month, does not match the $58.46 in the store's product data11. On Amazon, a 3-month kit is $79.99 and rated 3.8 out of 5 from 318 reviews (checked 24 Oct 2026)13.

Frequently asked questions
Does micro-infusion really work for hair growth?
Not proven. Scalp microinfusion has only "a few case reports", a 2023 paper says. Microneedling has better data, but mostly as an add-on. A 2025 review of 12 trials with 631 people found microneedling plus minoxidil raised hair count more than minoxidil alone. Results varied a lot between trials. No study tests an at-home micro infusion hair kit by name.
How many times a week should you microneedle for hair loss?
Studies used a range. A 2022 review of 22 studies found sessions from "once weekly to monthly". No study sets one best schedule for home kits. Kit makers differ too: Microfollic and SOREN say once a week, and Glov's current page says once every two weeks. Follow the kit's own directions, and do not add extra sessions.
What is micro infusion for hair growth?
It is a way to put a product into the scalp with very fine needles in one step. A 2023 paper describes scalp microinfusion as a technique that delivers "a small amount of drugs" evenly into the skin, "combined with micro-needling". In clinics the product can be a drug. Home kits use cosmetic serums instead.
What is the downside of microneedling?
The FDA lists common risks such as redness, dryness, itching, peeling, bruising and bleeding. Less common risks include infection, skin color changes and cold sores coming back. It says not to use a microneedling device with an active infection, rash or cold sore, or within 6 months of taking isotretinoin. It also warns that re-using a needle cartridge is unsafe.
